HIPPA requirements have been an ingrained part of my work for over 20yrs. I’m used to the unique needs in keeping a conversation and documentation strictly for only those who need it. Certainly I over communicate that the conversation does not extend beyond the four walls we are in. I often speak deliberately in a softer tone and am sure to stop all talking once a door opens or we are interrupted.
I also let them know that if we happen to run into each other (i.e in the community, at the airport, in another support group) that I won’t acknowledge them unless they greet me first. This way the client has control over what he or she is comfortable revealing and sees my commitment to confidentiality.
One of the biggest barriers to seeking out care for myself surrounded this issue. My mental health care needs were needlessly delayed almost 10years because I was afraid my own physician, her nurses and care team might not realize how important secrecy around my depression, anxiety and SUD was to me.
I want all my clients to know how seriously I take HIPPA rules and laws for professional and personal reasons.
